Dr. H. Noshir Antia – father of surgery Leprosy
Plastic surgeons are always considered that doctors in the rich world. However, Dr. H. Antia Noshir was a legendary plastic surgeon who performed plastic surgery to help thousands of patients suffering from leprosy, a contagious disease that affects skin and nerves, leading to unsightly mutilations and functional deformities.
Dr. Noshir Antia, a surgeon known worldwide for his pioneering work among leprosy patients, has demonstrated an alternative model of low-cost, accessible health care through her lifelong commitment to the health of the community based on research in rural India. His contributions in various fields of health are legendary and had a significant impact on the course of health policy in India in recent decades.
Dr. Antia after graduating from Grant Medical College and JJ Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, India, postgraduate studies in surgery England overall. Dr. Antia in England with Sir Harold Gillie, founder of modern plastic surgery who inspired him to become a plastic surgeon. Dr. Antia soon returned to India and met with the leprosy patients with deformities several isolated behind a barbed wire fence, treated almost like criminals while cycling past Government colony of leprosy in Pune, India.Dr. Antia on that day decided to help the victims of this terrible disease. Since then he has worked tirelessly to correct deformities of leprosy through the application of the principles of plastic surgery with his entire force.
Quoting Dr. Antia in its early days: "Since leprosy patients who had hitherto not been admitted to hospitals non-missionary, and as nobody was willing to help me, for fear of this disease, who had to go alone Kondhwa Leprosy Hospital on the outskirts of Pune. I took my own instruments and drapes and operated on a rickety wooden table with other patients and attendants only. One holding a torch, boiling instruments in a hundi and one wore a gown and gloves for surgery! In the nine months I was in a position demonstrate that all the deformities of the face caused by this disease can be corrected by the use and modification of the basic principles of plastic surgery. All this had to be performed under local anesthesia. The results were good, but the table was broken during the first operation and therefore the remaining operations had to be completed on the ground! "
Later, Dr. Antia started a plastic surgery service at the Grant Medical College and the Group JJ Hospital, Mumbai, India. For the first time, Antia leprosy patients admitted for corrective surgery despite warnings from colleagues that this would be another unit patients Dr. Antia away.Quoting: "When I started to recognize my leprosy patients in general wards, the hospital warned me there would be a public outcry," he said. "But of course not. Only doctors who were afraid"
Antia achievements have been widely recognized and acclaimed. Although he received several awards including the Padma Shri and the prestigious Hunter Chair of the Royal College of Surgeons in London, but the prize most dear in his heart "is the love and affection that is provided by patients, colleagues and those whom we have trained as village women. "Dr. Antia pleased to say that the greatest gift I ever received was from a leprosy patient which launched a prosthetic shoe, saying that did not suit their needs. "I am pleased to have restored it so well he could express himself without fear."
Dr. Noshir Antia showed the world how the majority of problems can be solved if the necessary will and determination. Until his death on June 26, 2007 in Pune, India 85, fought for the betterment of the poor and helped in the rehabilitation of thousands of leprosy patients.
