NEW DELHI (AP) – Human rights activists Friday criticized local officials that allowed hundreds of children who fell from the roof of a mosque in western India in the belief the fall – which ends when the babies are trapped in a sheet – ensure good health and prosperity for their families. The ritual in the Durga Baba Umer, a sanctuary Muslim, is believed to have been followed for nearly 700 years, and each year hundreds of people, both Hindus and Muslims participate in the ritual. Local officials said to television news stations have been no reports of injuries. The children, mostly under two years, on Thursday hanging from the roof of the sanctuary, near of Sholapur, some 280 kilometers south of Mumbai, before being dropped about 50 feet on a sheet held by parents and other believers. Television channels showed babies crying while stirring in the air before being abandoned.
