Assam Travel Guide
The name "Assam" is derived from the word "Assam", which, in Sanskrit, refers to unequal or without rival. The uneven topography of the land, full of mountains, plains and rivers might, therefore, have contributed to its name. A land of 25 million people principal language of Assam is Assamese, although a large number of other languages spoken.

Places to Visit in Assam:
• Kamakhya Temple
The Guwahati's main attraction is the Kamakhya Temple in Nilachal hill, where Goddess Kamakhya is worshiped. The temple offers a fabulous view of the city and the mighty Brahmaputra. The ponds here are home to several species of giant tortoises.
• Assam State Museum
The museum was created in 1940 as a body NGO, but was taken by the state government in 1953. It is the largest museum in the Northeast and one of the biggest multipurpose museums in the country.
• Kaziranga National Park
Home of the legendary and rhinoceros horns. This is also a World Heritage Site. Besides the above, Umananda Temple, Navagraha Temple, Basistha Ashram, Hajo, Cherrapunjee (where it rains more in the world!) Nmaeri National Park are other tourist attractions in Assam.
Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden •
The botanical garden was created in 1982, has an area of 82 hectares. He has a house full of orchids with 44 varieties of rare orchids of the Northeast. The garden has several types of palms, shrubs, grasses, conifers and broadleaf plants.
• Temple Umananda
It is a temple of the god Shiva, in the middle of the river Brahmaputra in the island of Umananda. The temple can be reached by crossing the river by boat sailing country Kachari Ghat. The place resembles a beehive during Shiva Ratri when pilgrims from all over flock to the island in boats packed.
• Hajo
Hajo is a sacred place for Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists. This place is situated west (25 miles) from Guwahati and is the site of the mosque in Mecca-Pua, established by Iraqi prince turned preacher, who came to Assam in the 12th century to spread the teachings of the Prophet.
Festivals in Assam:
Bihu
The most important festivals of Assam are Bihus, which is celebrated with joy and abundance for all people regardless of Indio northwest of caste, creed, religion, faith and belief. This also starts the growing season. The merriments include dances accompanied by the rhythms of wild and lustful Dhol and Pepa (buffalo bagpipe). Songs sung in this Bihu are woven around themes of love and often carry erotic overtones. People adorn traditional costumes dhoti Gamocha and Chadar, Mekhala.
Majuli Festival

Getting There:
By Air
Airlines Indian / Alliance Air, Jet Airways and Air Sahara connect Guwahati to Kolkata, Delhi, Agartala and Imphal. Taxi services, including prepaid services are available at the airport for transfer to the city. To travel to Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Arunachal Helicopter Service Helicopter Service Pradesh airport Guwahati is available.
By train
Express trains link all parts of the country in Guwahati. Rajdhani Express from Delhi (28 hours) Saraighat Express from Kolkata (18 hrs), Dadar Express from Mumbai (54 hours) and Bangalore Express (60 hours) are some of the important trains to Guwahati. Taxis and auto-rickshaws with negotiable rates are available at the transfer station to different parts of the city.
Road
Many companies private tours and Assam State Transport Corporation operates an extensive bus network from anywhere. There are routes that connect Guwahati to Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tinsukhia, Silchar, Dimapur, Kohima, Imphal, Aizawl and Itanagar.
