Chennai International Airport
History
The old terminal at Meenambakkam
Chennai was one of the first airports in India, and was the target end of the first Air India flight from Bombay (Mumbai) via Belgaum in 1954. The first passenger terminal was built on the northeast side of the airfield, which is in suburban Meenambakkam due to which was referred to as Meenambakkam airport. A new terminal complex was constructed later in Tirusulam, further south, near the Pallavaram which passenger operations were transferred. The old terminal building is now used as a cargo terminal and the base of the Indian courier company Blue Dart.
Structure
Chennai Airport at night
Chennai International Airport has three terminals: The old terminal at Meenambakkam is used for cargo, that the new passenger terminal complex in Tirusulam is used for passenger operations. The passenger terminal complex consists of domestic and international terminals each by a link building that houses administrative offices and a restaurant. Although the complex is a continuous structure, was built incrementally, with the Kamaraj Anna and terminals to be added in 1988 to the pre-existing terminal Meenambakkam.
The first part to be built was the international terminal had two Aerobridge (gateways) followed by the domestic terminal with three Aerobridge. After completion of the domestic terminal, the old terminal at Meenambakkam was used exclusively for charging. Recently the international terminal was extended further south, by adding a new block which includes three Aerobridge. At present, the international unit used for new outlets, while the oldest, used for arrivals.
Terminals, airlines and destinations
Domestic flights operate from Kamaraj Domestic Terminal (KDT), while the Anna International Terminal (AIT) is for international flights. The old terminal at Meenambakkam is used for cargo operations.

Facts and figures
Anna International Terminal
Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. reference material may be challenged and eliminated. (January 2010)
At present, the Chennai airport handles about 25 aircraft movements per hour, which will be saturated by the years 2014-15. However, rush hour traffic handling capacity will be exhausted much sooner than that. Anna International Terminal handled 3,410,253 passengers in 2007-08 and is capable of handling passengers 3M years, and has surpassed the passenger handling capacity. Similarly, Kamaraj Domestic Terminal, which handled 7,249,501 passengers in 2007-08, has the capacity to handle six million passengers per year. Also in this case, the end demand far exceeds capacity. In all airports in Chennai handles a capacity of 10,659,754 passengers 2007-08. The airport handled a total cargo of 270 608 tonnes in 2007-08 [citation needed].
In 2007-08, the existing airport handled 1,15,865 movements aircraft and its ability to handle aircraft movements is likely to be saturated by 2014-15.
The existing airport can handle about 25 aircraft movements per hour and even after the expansion, the airport will get saturated by 2014-15 and Greenfield airport has to be ready by then. The same logic has been applied in Mumbai, where the Navi Mumbai International Airport is getting ready for the moment, the existing saturated at the same time.
The AAI believes that a logical thing would be to construct of a new domestic terminal and allow simultaneous use of runways crossed there. These things can take us through until 2015.

Modernization and expansion
Update on the baggage claim terminal International Area
Chennai airport has been slated for modernization and expansion. Works will be carried out by the Airports Authority of India and include the creation of a parallel runway, taxiways, aprons and new passenger terminal buildings. The expansion works involve the acquisition of land in areas nearby. The extension of the existing airport was discussed in Manapakkam, Kolapakkam, Gerugambakkam and Tharapakkam in Sriperumbudur taluk after a resolution to that effect was adopted by the government.
The government will provide adequate compensation to 947 households in these areas and also to rehabilitate them. [Quote edit] The housing rehabilitation would be done in the first phase of the expansion work itself.
The modernization and restructuring are expected to cost around Rs 2350 crore, of which the cost of construction of the runway, taxiway and apron would be around Rs 1,100 crore, while the cost of construction the building of the cargo terminal building, parking and lift the face would be Rs 1250 crore. [Citation needed]
Under the modernization plan, the secondary runway be built on the Adyar river via a bridge. The track will extend Adyar river. A bridge over the river will be built to accommodate the runway and taxiway. This makes the Chennai airport, the only international airport in India to have an airstrip across the river. In Mumbai only one end of the runway is on the Mithi river. The secondary runway expansion will cost around Rs 430 crore and will be completed in 2010.
The proposal for Chennai Metro Rail project will connect Chennai International Airport to various parts of the city. Tentatively, the project is scheduled for completion in the year 2013-2014.
Proposed new terminals passenger
The current development projects include the construction of a new domestic terminal and expansion of the existing international terminal. The design is a collaborative effort of four companies. While Hargreaves Associates Gensler has made the landscape design and Frederic Schwartz Architects are responsible for the design of passenger terminal buildings, parking structures and road access system access. The Creative Group is the local architects for the project. The proposed design will connect with the design elements of the existing terminal. Previously reported that the new terminal buildings will be capable of handling 10 million passengers and when integrated with existing terminals will result in a handling capacity of 23 million passengers a year. The buildings are expected to have a new terminal area of about 1, 40,000 140 square meters with check-in counters and 60 immigration counters and two runways, interconnected by a network of taxiways. The terminal complex will be a step Travelator high that connects the Domestic Terminal and International Terminal a distance of 1 km. You will have an elevated roadway in a tube top and below which have two Walkalators
The design details of the tracks are handled by the Airports Authority of India, while companies are limited to architectural design Building on the landside of the runway. This proposal is parallel to the existing runway. The complete design is organized around sustainable gardens lush view and wing-like roofs helps collect rainwater and become part of the garden.
Proposed new integrated cargo complex
An integrated cargo complex will be built cargo complex in Chennai International Airport. This complex was built at a cost of Rs. 145 crore in 15 months. While the ground floor would measure 21,000 square meters, The first floor will be built on 12,100 square meters. The new building will be used exclusively for import activities. Once the civil works were completed, automatic storage and retrieval system would be installed. It would cost Rs. 75 crore.
New Greenfield airport
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi announced the creation of a completely new airport and new Sriperumbudur Tiruvallur taluks, apart from the existing airport expansion Tirusulam.
Airport brand new come up in 3486.66 hectares (14.1100 km2), the expansion of Chennai airport would be done in 1069.99 hectares (4.3301 km2), estimated at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore.
Initially, the work on greenfield airports would be entrusted to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). However, the airport ", that even in Sriperumbudur near Chennai will be developed under a public-private partnership. Prime Minister Committee also has requested a pre-feasibility report for this airport.
The greenfield airport will have four runways. Looking at the Chennai airport, airport world's leading developers are forging alliances with India to bid for the project. Companies interested in the project include Changi Airport of Singapore, Macquarie Group, GMR Group, GVK Industries Ltd. and Tata Group.
Union Civil Aviation Minister, Praful Patel has made clear that there's no role for IAA in the development of entirely new airport near Chennai.
The new airport is expected to be completed within 28 months after starting work.
Greenfield Airport Project shelved?
The second airport at Sriperumbudur than expected may not take off as both the Centre and state government are preparing to shelve the project.
Although the Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has made a study of technical and economic feasibility project, a senior official in the ministry of civil aviation in the EU, said the government is convinced that there is no pressing need for a second airport in the city, as the existing airport is being expanded Meenambakkam.
Transport links
The airport is situated in the busy Great Southern Trunk Road (Route National 45) and is also served by the Airport station (Tirusulam) in the suburban rail network. The proposed Metro Rail System (Chennai Metro) will also connect Airport with other important places in Chennai.
Incidents and accidents
In August 1984, the explosion of a bomb than 1,200 meters from the airport killed 33 people and wounded 27.
